QUICK PROCEDURE FOR TESTING CONCRETE CYLINDERS USING A FORNEY
TESTING MACHINE
WITH A SPX PUMP AND A TEST PILOT DIGITAL

1.

Turn on digital. Allow to warm up for 15 Minutes prior to use.

Insert the bottom of the specimen into the bottom pad base and center. Place the top pad base on the specimen. Insert the entire assembly into the testing machine and center it.

If you are testing 6 X 12 samples, the digital is currently set up for this size. You can then proceed to step 5. If you are testing another size sample, proceed to step 4.

Press the "" key on the digital display. "RUN +" will appear. Press the key and the digital will show the first of several choices. "Cube" should be displayed first, by pressing the key again you will see "Cylinder". Press the key and you will see the first of two choices. Press the key to see "Edit Specimen". Press the to enter this menu and you will see the diameter setting. Press the key again to see the current value. Pres the key again to blank out the entry and use the number key pad to enter your new diameter. Press the key to accept this value then press and the Specimen Height will be displayed. Press the key to see the diameter reading. Press the key to blank out the current reading and use the number pad to enter the new diameter. Press the key to accept this value and press the key several times until you reach the normal operating mode. You can now proceed to zero the machine and perform the test. to see the Press the key the press the key. The digital will say "Initializing" then show the regular display.

5.

Start the pump and move the piston in "RAPID ADVANCE" until you have " of daylight. IMMEDIATELY put the valve into "METERED ADVANCE".

6.

Check the centering of the sample. Press the "ZERO" key.

7.

Position the valve into "RAPID ADVANCE" and preload the sample to about 6000 lbs. Put the valve back into "METERED ADVANCE"

8.

Wait several seconds until the pump gets up to speed. The test should start climbing at the appropriate rate. If you want to know the rate, press the "STRESS" button TWICE and the rate light will illuminate showing the rate of loading in PSI per Second.

9.

If it is too slow, turn the star shaped know Counter Clockwise "CCW", if it is too fast turn it Clockwise "CW". Once you have the rate set, push the "Force" button again to follow the load on the digital. Once you have set the speed, you should not have to do this again for subsequent samples.

10.

When the sample fails, put the valve into "RETRACT" and shut off the pump. Press the "PEAK" button to see the peak load in lbf. Press the "STRESS" button and then press the "PEAK" button again to see the peak stress. After you have written down the results, press the "FORCE" button to return to a force reading.

11.

Proceed to step 2 to start your next test.
